Following the success of the Vietnam International Aviation Equipment and Technology Exhibition (VIAE) held in Ho Chi Minh City in 2019, and after more than two years of postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vietnam International Aviation Exhibition – VIAE 2022 has been launched, much anticipated by domestic and international aviation partners and businesses.
According to the organizers, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global aviation industry, and Vietnam’s in particular, experienced very strong growth. On average, the aviation industry worldwide created approximately 65.6 million jobs, including 10.2 million direct jobs and over 55 million indirect jobs. Aviation activities impacted $2.7 trillion in economic activity, equivalent to about 3.6% of global gross domestic product (GDP).
Specifically, the Vietnamese aviation industry from 2008-2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic), with airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific Airlines, Bamboo Airways, VASCO (Vietnam Aviation Service Company), and SFC (Specialized Aviation Service Company for Oil and Gas), contributed to a 17.1% increase in passenger traffic and a 13.8% increase in cargo traffic – an extremely impressive figure.
However, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the global economy suffered enormous damage, with the aviation industry being the first to be severely impacted. According to the ICAO report on aviation performance in 2020, international and domestic passenger numbers decreased by 1.38 billion and 1.32 billion passengers respectively, a decrease of 74% and 50% compared to 2019, resulting in revenue losses of $250 billion and $120 billion respectively.
The COVID-19 pandemic plunged the global aviation industry, and Vietnam’s in particular, into a comprehensive crisis as airlines were forced to suspend flights while still having to pay for aircraft maintenance, airport repairs, personnel, and other expenses, along with huge loans taken out for purchasing new or leasing passenger aircraft previously.
According to ICAO, the air transport industry has contributed to the utilization of social products by transporting large quantities of goods from production sites to consumption sites as quickly as possible, significantly increasing their value. At the same time, it is an economic sector that links various production and social life sectors. The development of aviation leads to the simultaneous development of other industries such as logistics, tourism, restaurants and hotels, mechanics and electronics, education and training, and construction. Therefore, the aviation industry needs to be planned as a leading, key economic sector to attract foreign investment.
The launch of VIAE 2022 will promote the resumption of trade between Vietnamese and global aviation, while also contributing to strengthening business cooperation and opening up opportunities for post-pandemic recovery.
With the theme “Sustainable Development for a Bright Future,” the exhibition will be a gathering place for experts, business leaders, airlines, and leading domestic and international manufacturers to network, exchange, and share new development opportunities and initiatives, as well as discuss practical topics with reputable experts and speakers from Vietnam and abroad. In addition, it will showcase advanced aviation equipment and technologies, and modern aircraft models.
The mission of the Vietnam International Aviation Exhibition 2022 is to serve as a central bridge connecting the practical needs and advanced achievements of aviation science and technology from around the world to Vietnam and vice versa. Together, we will seize new opportunities, innovate, and invest to build the aviation industry, develop a progressive and modern Vietnam, and contribute to the country’s industrialization and modernization process.
